Receiving Spiritual Guidance
This week, I was asked to give a lesson in Relief Society, which is the group of women in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints who dedicate their lives to serving with charity. Anyhow, the lesson was on receiving spiritual guidance. I learned so much while I was preparing for the lesson, that I thought it would be a good thing to share here as well. The lesson was taken from a talk by Elder Richard G. Scott in October’s conference.
First, I showed a picture that I have hanging in my home of a girl. It says…”We are not earthly beings having a spiritual experience, but rather, we are spiritual beings having an earthly experience.” There are so many different voices in our world and it can be hard to discern the voice of the Holy Ghost among all the rest. I showed an egg and asked how a chick was able to hatch out of an egg. Does the mother hen just peck away the shell and take out the chick? What would happen if she did? The answer was obvious…the chick would die. It wouldn’t be strong enough to survive. Just like the chick must struggle to become strong, we must struggle with learning to recognize the Holy Ghost and divine guidance so that we can be strong enough to follow it and to learn and grow.
There are lots of ways that people feel the Holy Ghost and we talked of several and different women shared their own personal stories of how they had received inspiration. Then, we read a passage by Elder Scott of how he had received inspiration and written it down and was blessed to receive more revelation.
Our church is based on the principle that God has not ceased to reveal things to his children. We each have the capacity to be blessed with instruction and guidance as we need it for the things we are responsible for. We can depend on it and we should be practicing and learning how to better follow the Lord’s instructions to us.
