Mormon Rules

Mormon rules are as follows:

  1. Try to be like Jesus. That about covers all the rules, but I know you wanted to know more than that, so here goes.
  2. Follow the prophet. That means doing all that the prophet has said to do, including the past prophets.  So, we have food storage, 72 hour preparedness kits, attend the temple, read the scriptures, have family home evening, etc.
  3. Keep the commandments. This is not only the basic 10 commandments, but also all that God has commanded through living and past prophets and through the scriptures, etc.
  4. Keep the Word of Wisdom.  This is basically, no alcohol, tobacco, drugs, or caffeinated drinks.  We also try to eat meat sparingly and have lots of fruits, grains, and vegetables.  We do use prescription drugs, but not abusively.
  5. Dress Modestly. We try to keep our clothing modest and usually that means clothing to the knees and covering our shoulders.  And everything in between, of course.  There are times when that’s not really practical, like for swimming and stuff.
  6. Stay morally clean. We do what’s right.  We use clean language, treat people kindly, are honest in all our dealings, and remain faithful to our marriage.
  7. Go to church each Sunday.
  8. Read your scriptures. We read the Bible and the Book of Mormon as well as The Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price.  We also read The Ensign, which contains the latest from our living prophet every month.
  9. Say your prayers. We pray as a family, and pray individually.  We pray when we eat and we pray all the time.
  10. No extramarital or premarital sex. We believe that the relationship between husband and wife is a sacred one reserved for the bonds of marriage and should not exist elsewhere.

So, that about covers the Mormon rules.  I hope you understand the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints a little better.

Amy, I would need to get an all new lifestyle. No cigs or Pepsi. Wow!
Another great post, straight to the point.

  2. Shayne says:

Amy, I like the way you present these. Very simple and easy to understand. I can attest that I have seen happiness in my life and those church members who follow these rules.

  3. Amy Boyack says:

Thanks Bill and Shayne for the comments. It’s so nice that you are willing to contribute to the conversation. While it may be a different lifestyle, the happiness and freedom from addictions is worth it. Now, if I could get rid of my addiction to chocolate… Well, I don’t know if I really want to go there. It’s one of the last legal sins for Mormons.

That was a wonderful little synopsis of Mormon Rules :)

  5. Amy Boyack says:

I’m glad you like it, Merrianne. Thanks for stopping by. I’ll have to go check out your blog.

  6. Bill Beavers says:

Amy, You’re correct about the addictions I will freely admit. Next, I would like to remind you that Chocolate contains Caffein. LOL

  7. Amy Boyack says:

I know. That’s probably why I’m so addicted to it. We’ve been left to our own devices on chocolate. Most mormons eat chocolate and don’t think twice about it. There’s not much caffeine in it, but I know that it’s there. It’s my only Mormonly legal caffeine source, so I’m a bit protective of it.

  8. Great idea with the blog. I personally don’t know anyone of the Mormon faith and I’m sure there are many people that don’t either,so this a a great way to inform people. During the primaries, Rominey’s faith was brought up unfairly I thought.

  9. Amy Boyack says:

I’m glad you found it helpful, Steve. There were a lot of slanted media stories about Mit Romney and I agree that it was unfair. But, that’s politics. We as a nation have to rise above that and see people for who they really are. It’s unfortunate that it takes so much research on our part to figure out the truth about people.

  10. Hello. Nice! Really caouldn\’t agree more REGARDING \”Rules | Idaho Mormon\”. I really liked it a lot. Try caffeine in chocolate. Thanks.

  11. Katrina says:

Why do they have rules? I was wondering this Because i have never seen a religion so full of rules. I’m 100% Christian But we don’t have rules like that. Why do they?
I love Mormon people they are very nice and helpful. I’m not trying to say they’re different. But wondering why they have these.

  12. Amy Boyack says:

    Katrina,
They’re not exactly rules, they’re more guidelines for living a happy life. There are no Mormon police who check to see if you are doing what’s right. There are interviews with the bishop if you would like to go to the temple or be baptized and that’s the only time you have to say whether you’re living certain standards or not. The rest of the time, you just go to church and are taught about how to live a happy and free life. Sometimes what look like restrictions actually set you free. For example, how free is a person who is addicted to drugs? Do they still have the choice of whether to do those drugs or not? Or did they lose that choice when they became addicted? The reason I have used the words rules in some of my writing is because that is what people are searching in Google. It’s why my site is called Idaho Mormon instead of Idaho Latter Day Saint. I want the people who are already searching for these things to find the words they are looking for and be taught by someone who is in The Church instead of someone outside it.
