What Happens When We Die?

What happens when we die?

What happens when we die?

Many people wonder what happens when we die.  Where do we go?  Is it over?  What can we expect?  As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, I have been taught that the spirit which dwells in our earthly bodies will live on forever.  We were spirits before we came  to earth to gain a body.

When we die, our spirit leaves our body and goes to live in the spirit world.  That would either be paradise or prison, depending on how we lived our lives.  There will be a time when we can be taught and we can repent of our sins.  It willl be much harder to repent after this life because we will not have a body to help us overcome our addictions and our problems.  The best time to repent is in this life while we have a body.  But it wouldn’t be fair if that were the only chance we got.  Some people lived in a time or a place where there was no exposure to the truth.  We believe that everyone will have a chance to hear the truth and accept or reject that truth according to their free agency.

Eventually, there will be a day of judgment when we will be judged on our hearts and our actions.  We will be resurrected with perfect bodies that will never die.  If there are things we have done which call for repentance and we have not repented of them, then we will need to pay the price.   There are three degrees of glory.  The celestial kingdom (heaven, or the highest of the three kingdoms) is for those who did all the ordinances necessary (or accepted the ordinances after this life if they died without the law) and repented of all their sins.  These people will be crowned with glory like the sun.  The terrestrial kingdom is for those who rejected the gospel in this life and who accept it in the spirit world. It is also for people who die without the law who reject it in the spirit world.  It is for honorable people who are lukewarm in their convictions rather than valiant in the Lord’s cause.  These people will be crowned with glory of the moon.  The telestial kingdom (the lowest of the three) is for the people who have been carnal, sensual, devilish and who have chosen the philosophies of the world, rather than the testimony of Jesus.  It is for murderers, liars, thieves, and adulterers.  They will not be able to be with God and Jesus.  Their glory will be like the stars.  There is also a place called outer darkness where the people who have had a perfect knowledge and then deny it and serve the devil will go.  There is no glory there.

Another thing we believe is that families can be together forever.  We believe that in the celestial kingdom, the people who have been sealed together forever in a temple by proper authority can be together for eternity.  There needs to be the sacred temple ordinance of sealing (being married forever by a person with the proper authority to do so) and they need to live a life worthy of the celestial kingdom, repenting of all their sins and following the Savior.  The people in the other two kingdoms will not enjoy this blessing.  They will not be married and will be servants.

I hope this will help you understand our beliefs.  If you want to know for yourself if this is true, I would suggest that you pray about it.  As it says in James 1:5, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God who giveth to all men liberally.  But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering…”

I was just thinking about it because a friend of mine had a few deaths in her family last month. I’m always trying to share my beliefs about different things. This seemed to be a good thing to share. My brother died when I was young and I’ve had a lot of time to think about death and study what our church teaches. I’m glad you found this interesting.
