Why we do genealogy

I’ve been approached about why we do genealogy and how to use the great resources offered by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

We do genealogy to preserve a record of our ancestry.  Ultimately, the reason for this is to offer to them the opportunity to accept temple ordinances done in their name by proxy.  We do this because people have souls that live on after this life.  This life is a test and we need to do certain things to be able to move on after we die.  Many people have not had those opportunities in this life.  If there were no way to account for that, this test would be unfair.  We know that God is fair and that His ways are just and merciful.  This is His way to provide a way for people to accept Him and His son that may not have been able to do so while on earth.  No one will be forced to accept these ordinances.  They will have the opportunity to accept or reject them.  Our only job is to make them available for them.  Malachi prophesied the hearts of the children would turn to their fathers.  This is why we have a burning desire to know who our ancestors are and to record and save our family history.  “Families can be together forever through Heavenly Father’s plan.  I always want to be with my own family, and The Lord has shown me how I can.”
